SUMMARY:Talk by Laura Probert on Dame Janet Stancomb-Wills: Ramsgate's Clifftop Amazon
DESCRIPTION:The year 2023 marks the centenary of the appointment of Ramsgate’s (and Kent’s) first female mayor and greatest benefactor\, Dame Janet Stancomb-Wills. To commemorate this\, Ramsgate Working History have identified inspiring women from the town’s past whose contributions have sometimes been overlooked and lost to time. The 23 for 23 Leading Ramsgate Women are pioneers and trailblazers in civil rights\, politics\, business and the arts. Their legacy has shaped not only Ramsgate\, but also the world we live in today. \nDame Janet Stancomb-Wills achievements are central to the 23 for 23 celebrations and Laura Probert will illustrate why she was such a commanding and influential figure in the history of Ramsgate. \nAs to the ‘Cilifftop Amazon’ title of this talk\, it was in 1922 that the Revd Hertslet\, Vicar of St George’s Church\, commented that he was sure Dame Janet would have had no hesitation in leading a squadron of amazons on the East Cliff during the war\, repelling any attempt at a German landing with her own hands had the need arisen. \nDoors open at 6:30pm and the talk will run from 7pm to 8pm. Our room at the San Clu Hotel has full disabled access and facilities. There is also on-street unrestricted parking in the streets close to the venue. \nIt is free to Ramsgate Society members. Everyone is welcomed but a £3 voluntary donation will be requested from non-members. Booking in advance is essential here: https://bit.ly/DameJanetTalk

SUMMARY:The Moving Essence of Home presented by Dave Neita
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to partner with The Ramsgate Festival of Sound to bring you a talk by Dave Neita. Our involvement with this event grew out of our collaboration with Sabina Desir on the ‘Banned’ project although it is something much wider than that. It is not specifically concerned with Ramsgate but we hope you will be inspired to come along to this very special event in our town. \nIt will explore the manner in which the concept and nature of home changes over a lifetime\, with a special focus on the global traveler. \nDave Neita is a lawyer\, a published poet\, lecturer and international speaker specialising in cultural leadership.  He is a commentator on race\, politics\, mental health and the arts. An advocate for human rights and an expert in organisational development and mental health\, Dave has worked with the Zurich Corporation\, Hartford Financial Services and NASA and has delivered a sermon at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Redemption and Transformation. He continues to speak widely in Churches in the UK and abroad\, promoting a redemptive and inclusive message of bringing about harmony in community. \nHe has an MA in Cultural Leadership\, volunteers his time in the community and served as the UK ambassador for the European Year of Equal Opportunity for All: Face of the Year Campaign.  Known for his success as a member of the legal team behind a class action suit against a major multinational corporation on behalf of thousands of injured South Africa Miners\, Dave continues to work as an advocate for underprivileged\, exploited or disenfranchised people\, everywhere. In February 2019 Dave participated in\, and won\, the Cambridge Debate (Oldest Debating Society) at Jesus College\, Cambridge University.  Taking a creative approach to campaigning\, he has written a play on the Windrush Scandal called The Bitter Windrush Blues and he has performed and toured this play across the UK demanding justice for those adversely affected by the hostile environment. \nThis is a free event with donations welcome. Reserve a place through the Ramsgate Festival of Sound website https://ramsgatefestival.org/event/david-neita/

SUMMARY:The Tall Ships and Ramsgate
DESCRIPTION:Our next Ramsgate Society talk will be led by Paul Bishop and Stephen Byrne on the possibility of bringing Tall Ships events back to Ramsgate as a way of using Ramsgate’s maritime heritage to boost the visitor economy on which the town is so dependant. \nPaul Bishop is the Race Director for Sail Training International (STI) and was responsible for The Tall Ships Races 2022. He also advises on technical aspects of sail training within STI and liaises with host ports on the infrastructure\, in-port facilities and port programme necessary for the Tall Ships Races. Stephen Byrne is a Ramsgate resident and long-time supporter of the idea of bringing the Tall Ships back to Ramsgate and will talk about the Ramsgate perspective. \nRamsgate Royal Harbour was designed as a port of refuge for Tall Ships and presently hosts occasional tall ships\, usually attracting a great deal of local and visitor interest. \nThe last tall ship fleet welcomed to the harbour was in 2009 when a group from Holland were hosted by the Royal Temple Yacht Club where this talk will be held.\nThe popularity of Tall Ship events is clearly evidenced by the remarkable consistent success of such events managed by Sail Training International which organises Regattas (port to port events with typically 15 to 20 vessels) and Tall Ship Races (long distance events covering many ports for larger fleets and larger vessels). \nAll are welcome and attendance is free for members of the Ramsgate Society with non-members requested to make a voluntary donation of £3. Doors open at 6:30pm with the talk starting at 7pm. \nTo attend you must book in advance here: bit.ly/TallShipTalk

SUMMARY:Tour of Radford House
DESCRIPTION:Were you inspired by our January Radford House talk about the ambition of Ramsgate Town Council to create a valuable community asset out of the old Fire Station? Or perhaps you missed the event and want to learn more before you could decide to contribute to the discussion of possibilities. What is there in this building that could be useful to you?  Your views will be especially welcome if you are an event organiser or a member of a community organisation that could do with more space. \nWe have arranged a follow-up\, starting at 2pm on 31st March\, for up to 20 people to tour the building and to engage with Suzy Humphries\, the Radford House Community and Events Organiser. You must book for this free event\, but please only do so if you will definitely attend – numbers are strictly limited. \nNote that until renovations start\, which include installing a lift\, the two upper floors at Radford House are reached by fairly steep staircases. We apologise but please bear this in mind.

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk: Banned. Place\, Belonging\, Identity
DESCRIPTION:The Ramsgate Society provided research support to the curator of this exhibition\, Sabina Desir\, by gathering stories from those who were in our town (as children of course) during the time the American Airforce was stationed at RAF Manston during the ‘Cold War’ period of 1951 to 1958. \nNewspaper research\, our calls for people with memories through social media and our monthly Society newsletter produced nearly 100 recollections and from these we traced many of the images and stories you will find at the exhibition currently running till May 8th at the Turner Contemporary in Margate. \nThe exhibition\, curated by Sabina\, with Richard Birch as Visual Adviser\, explores differing responses by town council and local people to having 2\,500 USAF servicemen on their doorstep. These servicemen included 200 African American’s and other non-whites who\, because of the racial segregation of the US military\, were directed to be billeted and to seek entertainment in Ramsgate while the white servicemen were encouraged to concentrate in other Thanet towns. \nWe hope you will be pleased to learn that Ramsgate residents demonstrated a general hospitality to the airman\, regardless of race\, and fought against their own town council when the mayor suggested banning all American servicemen at Manston from having access to the town facilities. \nThe presentation on March 17th by Sabina Desir\, with support from Terry Prue\, will provide extra detail on what we found and some of the stories behind what you can see at the Turner. It is also a ‘thank you’ from us for the wealth of information we collected from Ramsgate residents before the passing of time risked that it would be gone forever. \nAs usual you must pre-book to attend and doors open at 6:30pm for the presentation and discussion runs from 7pm to 8pm. \nBooking at bit.ly/BannedTalk

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk: Geraint Franklin "Researching Ramsgate"
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Geraint Franklin from Historic England to give more context to the historic development of our town. \nAutumn 2022 marks the publication of Historic England’s Ramsgate Historic Area Assessment (HAA)\, the final research outcome of the Ramsgate Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) initiative. The report charts the historical development of the town and profiles its character and significance. In this talk Geraint provides an introduction to the HAA\, including both insights and opportunities for further research. \nOriginally a fishing community in the parish of St Lawrence\, Ramsgate assumed greater importance on becoming a limb of the Cinque Port of Sandwich. The commencement of a ‘harbour of refuge’ in 1750 coincided with Ramsgate’s growing popularity as a sea bathing resort. Improvements in passenger boats and the arrival of the railway opened up the resort to an increasingly broad social spectrum of visitors\, resulting in investment in bathing facilities\, entertainment venues and civic infrastructure. Ramsgate also attracted minority faith communities\, represented by the Montefiore Synagogue and A. W. N. Pugin’s Roman Catholic church of St Augustine. \nGeraint’s talk will explore the historical development of the town and profile the character and significance of its built heritage\, providing an evidence base for sustainable regeneration. The Historic Area Assessment is intended to assist stakeholders\, the local community and others in showing how Ramsgate has assumed its present form\, in identifying a range of building and landscape types and relating them to wider historical contexts. \nThe talk is free for Ramsgate Society members. Non-members are welcome but are asked to consider a voluntary donation of £3. Doors open at 6:30pm for the talk from 7pm to 8pm. As always\, places must be booked in advance. \nClick here to reserve your place: bit.ly/FranklinTalk

SUMMARY:Meeting on 20mph Proposals for Ramsgate
DESCRIPTION:We can see both safety and environmental merit in Ramsgate following other Kent towns and introducing some 20mph speed limit roads. If you agree\, or simply want to know more be aware that a ‘20’s Plenty’ meeting on the subject will take place on Thursday November 10\, at the Comfort Inn\, Victoria Parade\, Ramsgate from 7pm – 8.30pm. NB This is a date change from the original notification we received from the organisers. \nAs we understand it from the press report\, a traffic order has now been made changing 10 Ramsgate roads to 20mph zones. \nThe roads covered by the new speed limit: \nALBERT COURT\, CHARLOTTE COURT\, HARBOUR STREET and YORK STREET– For their entire length. \nHARBOUR PARADE – From its junction with Military Road to its junction with Marine Esplanade. \nHIGH STREET – From its junction with Harbour Street to its junction with Hardres Street. \nKING STREET – From its junction with High Street to its junction with Broad Street. \nMADERIA WALK – From its junction with Harbour Parade to its junction with Albion Place. \nQUEEN STREET – From its junction with High Street to its junction with Leopold Street. \nROYAL PARADE – From its junction with Harbour Parade for a distance of 33 metres in a westerly direction. \nShould more roads be added to this list? Would you like to see a 20mph limit throughout the town centre? If you want to make a case or simply to hear the debate do attend the meeting. \nA petition is also running by Ramsgate resident Emma Lloyd asking for the 20mph limit to be made throughout the town centre. \n Find the petition here

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk: Ivan del Renzio presents ‘An Architect’s Vision for Ramsgate’
DESCRIPTION:Ivan is a co-director of del Renzio & del Renzio\, a Ramsgate based RIBA Chartered practice\, who also teaches at the school of Architecture at the University of Kent focusing on regeneration projects in coastal towns. He argues that with the advent of the levelling up funding and previous piecemeal interventions in and around Ramsgate a joined-up plan is required. The practice will present some ideas and provocations to further the discussion on how Ramsgate could be made even better with small\, medium and larger ideas across Ramsgate with a brief history of the areas. The ideas have been developed through dialogue with residents\, students and practitioners. \nThe talk is free for Ramsgate Society members. Non-members are welcome but are asked to consider a voluntary donation of £3. Doors open at 6:30pm and places must be booked in advance. \nClick here to reserve you place:  bit.ly/delRenzioTalk

SUMMARY:A history-based talk to raise funs for St Laurence Church
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Bolton returns to St Laurence Church for another local-history based talk with all proceeds going to church funds. She will be looking at the lives of Katheryn Sprackling killed in 1652 and Sarah Noel who died in 1893. It will not be some sensationalist revelling in an evil act but rather an attempt to understand what shaped the two victims. What were their childhoods like? What education did they have? What happened at their weddings? What was their experience of motherhood and marriage? What was the parish like when they were here? Katheryn was a Puritan gentlewoman and Sarah a girl of humble origins who became a businesswoman. Both were active Christians and both met brutal ends before being laid to rest at St Laurence. How did the parish respond to each of the tragedies? What became of those left behind? And what is the link to Sherlock Holmes? Tickets will be available from the Parish Office at £5 a head which includes refreshments. All proceeds to church funds. Pre-booking is not essential but it does make it much easier for catering.

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk by Rob Kenyon and Kevin O’Connor on plans for Granville House and the Arts Barge
DESCRIPTION:As event organisers ourselves we are very aware that Ramsgate is lacking in creative spaces and indoor venues so we are particularly pleased to welcome the leaders of two social enterprise not-for-profit organisations with ambitions to fill the gap through major renovation projects. \nRob Kenyon is CEO and Founder of Heritage Lab CIC which has an overall aim to help regenerate Ramsgate and to support the local community and creative sector. One of their headline ambitions is to take over and renovate the currently unused public spaces within Granville House. \nKevin O’Connor is Director of the Ramsgate Arts Barge CIC which has ambitions to create a new multi-faceted arts and cultural space on a 133-year old Dutch barge permanently moored in Ramsgate Harbour. \nTo hear and to be able to ask questions about their plans and (hopefully) their progress you must reserve a place on the Eventbrite site. Doors open at 6:30pm. A voluntary donation of £3 is requested to help funding for the Festival. \nClick on the website link below (bit.ly/CICVisionTalk) to reserve a place

What if they returned? \nHer talk takes place at 7pm on August 31st at the Royal Temple Yacht Club. Places must be reserved in advance on the Eventbrite site. Doors open at 6;30pm. DESCRIPTION:Following a very successful and well-attended beach clean in April 2021\, we are once again organising The Pegwell Bay Beach Clean on Sunday 10th April 2022 from 1.30 till 3.30pm. We have been advised that that tide will be out at that time for easy access to the beach. \nPegwell Bay is one of Europe’s most important staging posts for migrating birds and insects. It is both a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) but unfortunately the area suffers from litter – mainly small plastic items being washed up on to the beach all year round. \nWe are meeting at the car park in front of the Viking Ship Café from 1pm onwards. The Café will be open for drinks and refreshments before and after the event. \nThanet Coast Project and Ramsgate Town Council have kindly offered to provide us with the Litter picking equipment and after the usual briefing and health and safety talk\, we will proceed down to the beach and start the beach clean. We will be working in small groups in line with health and safety guidance. \nOnce again we are thankful to Kent Wildlife Trust\, Thanet Coast Project\, RTC and TDC for the loan of equipment and support. \nDo come and join us and bring your friends\, children and grandchildren! \nJohn Walker and Meher Basit
