SUMMARY:March Talk: Kathryn Ferry on Seaside Architecture
DESCRIPTION:The next Ramsgate Society Talk takes place on March 26 at The San Clu and we welcome a historian specialising in architecture\, design and seaside culture. Author of numerous books she also shares her research through magazine articles\, radio\, television\, podcasts\, social media and\, of course\, lectures to a wide range of audiences from national museums to local history and community groups. \nWe are delighted that she has agreed to come to Ramsgate to expand upon her 2025 book on ‘Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture: Pools\, Piers and Pleasure around Britain’s Coast’. \nShe describes this publication as a nostalgic exploration of Britain’s distinctive and architecturally significant seafront buildings from the 1920s to the new millennium. Told chronologically\, she explores how resort architecture around the UK coast kept pace with changing fashions and the increasing competition of foreign destinations. \nAs seaside towns like ours ponder the future and as climate change and the soaring cost of living provoke changing attitudes to travel\, she believes this is the perfect time to champion the architectural legacy of our domestic tourism. \nBooking in advance is essential at https://bit.ly/KathrynFerryTalk and tickets are £3 for Ramsgate Society members andd £5 for Non-members. Note that doors open at 6:30pm with the talk itself with Q&A from 7pm to 8pm. Kathryn will also bring some books to the talk.

SUMMARY:2026 January Talk: Monkton Nature Reserve - Thanet's Hidden Gem
DESCRIPTION:For our first talk of 2026\, Dr Clive Nuttman\, will share some lesser known aspects of the Reserve’s history\, nature and achievements.\n\n\n\n\nDr Clive Nuttman describes himself as a semi-retired Environmental Biologist now volunteering to help the renaissance of Monkton Nature Reserve following ‘near extinction’ in the Covid pandemic. \nHis former research was in Pollination Ecology at St Andrew’s University and he worked for a number of years in the Zoology Department at Cambridge University for the Tropical Biology Association\, a conservation charity working to train young scientists in East Africa and Madagascar. \nEarlier this year\, Monkton Nature Reserve celebrated the 40th anniversary of its opening ceremony. Now run by the Thanet Countryside Trust (a registered charity)\, the organisation has built on the work of the earlier Thanet Conservation Group and countless volunteers to provide a vibrant site for visitors. \nWith conservation and education as driving influences\, the reserve has welcomed over 13\,000 visitors this year including over 3\,000 local schoolchildren on organised trips. \nAt the Ramsgate Society we feel the description ‘hidden gem’ is so appropriate and we hope you will come to learn more about this local landmark that is so much more than just a holiday attraction. \nTickets must be purchased on advance from https://bit.ly/MonktonTalk (see also Website URL link below). Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. Ticket cost of £3 is for Ramsgate Society members. For non-members it is £5. \nDrone photo of the Monkton Reserve by Nik Mitchell \n  \n

SUMMARY:November Talk: The World's Finest Shelter of its Time
DESCRIPTION:Historic England Image of Merrie England in 1932: Ramsgate Tourism is booming but dark days are coming! \nFor our next talk we are delighted to welcome Max Streatfield to talk about “The World’s Finest Shelter of its Time”. We are sure you will be quick to guess he means the Ramsgate Tunnels – you know where they are but how much do you really know about their history? \nMax himself has a long personal connection with the place. He has been a volunteer there since 2016 but his involvement goes way back. To quote directly: \n “My Parents were Tunnel Rats and my Grandfather was in the Fire Service for WW2. I first entered the Railway Tunnel aged 11 and later became a local firefighter which involved entering the Tunnels officially from 1982. My passion has grown for the Tunnels from continuing to research their history.” \nHe will be joined for the Q&A session by Garry Saunders who added much in the way of new research about the lesser-known connections between the Ramsgate Tunnels and those in Barcelona at the time of the Spanish Civil War. There is an exhibition about this connection at the tunnel entrance until the end of October which we hope will whet your appetite for this talk. \nFrom the talk you will learn why Ramsgate needed these Tunnels and about the 3 Men that took on the Government to make it happen. \n1) The story will start with WW1 and how Ramsgate became the most Bombed Seaside Town in the Country. \n2) The Vision of what Ramsgate would need in regard to the Air Raid Precautions (ARP) for the possible WW2. \n3) How the design came from the Spanish Civil War \n4) The Construction. \n5) The Ultimate Test. \nTo quote again from Max:  “We are still Learning and seeking the answers on how this happened here in Ramsgate. My Parents were saved\, so that is why I am alive and can look forward to talking to you on November 27th” \nThis talk on November 27th will be at the San Clu Hotel with doors opening 6:30pm and the talk plus Q&A running from 7pm to 8pm. Pre-booking is essential at £3 for Ramsgate Society members and £5 for non-members. \nClick Here to Book

SUMMARY:Heritage Open Day Talk by Clive Aslet: "If Walls Could Talk....Ramsgate's Architectural Secrets"
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days (HOD) is England’s largest festival of history and culture and runs for ten days every year. This year the dates are Friday 12th to Sunday 21st September and\, as always\, there will be free access to heritage events and activities across England. The national theme this year is ‘architecture’ and could have been chosen especially for our town! \nThere is so much of architectural interest in Ramsgate and we are dighted to have Clive Aslet to be our guide to some of the more unusual\, or simply just forgotten\, gems in our town. \nClive Aslet will be familiar to many of you as President and past speaker at previous events of the the Ramsgate Society. He is also a writer on British architecture and life\, a Visiting Professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge and publisher of Triglyph Books. For 13 years he was the Editor of Country Life magazine and currently co-hoasts the podcast ‘Your Places or Mine’ with John Goodall\, the current architectural editor of Country Life. \nClive was educated at King’s College School in Wimbledon and Peterhouse\, Cambridge\, where he earned a degree in the history of architecture. He has regularly broadcast on radio and television current affairs programmes including Newsnight. He is also Chairman of The Lutyens Society. \nThe talk will take place at the Oddfellows Hal\, 142 High St and\, in keeping with the HOD ethos\, will be free of charge – but we do still need you to book so that we can control the numbers. Book at https://bit.ly/CliveAsletTalk or use the website link below. \nDoors will open at 6:30pm and the talk\, including Q&A will run from 7pm till 8pm

SUMMARY:Our June Talk: From Vacancy to Vibrancy – The Role of Ramsgate Space in Local Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:This talk will be led by Louise Brookes\, a Founder and Executive Director of Ramsgate Space CIC\, who brings over 15 years of expertise in town centre revitalisation and a track record of transforming empty shops across the UK into thriving community assets. She will introduce other members of the team with equally impressive credentials on the night. \nRamsgate Space is a grassroots initiative working to bring Ramsgate’s empty shops back into use quickly\, creatively\, and with long-term ambition. Louise and her team will explore how they are using pop-ups\, testing trading\, and cultural events to activate disused spaces while building a pipeline toward more permanent solutions. \nAlongside stories from Ramsgate Space HQ and other early interventions\, the talk will look at the structural barriers to reuse; from fragmented ownership to slow legislation\, and discuss what tools\, funding streams\, and policy changes could unlock further progress. As more towns grapple with high street decline\, they will consider what regeneration really means at street level\, and how local people can help shape it. \nAs part of the evening\, they will invite attendees to take part in a short interactive activity: “Shops We Miss\, Spaces We Imagine.”  You’ll have the chance to share memories of much-missed local shops and contribute your ideas for how empty spaces in Ramsgate could be used in the future. Your insights will help inform the ongoing work of Ramsgate Space CIC. \nWe believe this is such an important talk that we are transferring to a larger venue at the Oddfellows Hall 142 High St\, Ramsgate CT11 9TY so there should be no problem fitting everyone in but we must still ask you to pay £3 to book your place. \nAs usual doors open with bar at 6:30pm and the talk will run from 7pm to 8p \nTickets https://bit.ly/RamsgateSpaceTalk or click the website URL listed below

SUMMARY:March 20th Talk on the National Coastwatch Institution
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to Becky Wing for permission to use her photo taken after the recent high winds swept along our East Cliff. It is easy to see what the gale has done but what is happening inside the National Coastwatch station? Who are they? What do they do? How do they fit alongside the Coastguards and RNLI etc.? \nThe National Coastwatch Institution first became a presence in Ramsgate in August 2023 with the attendance of an exhibition trailer near the main beach. The organisation has 56 Lookout Watchstations around the Coast and the one on the East Cliff was added less than a year ago. \nOur talk at the San Clu on March 20th will be led by Dave Coupland in a session which promises a multi-media combination of slides\, display boards\, video and some hands-on equipment. The Watchstations are entirely run by volunteers and he will be joined by their membership secretary\, Yvonne Smith. \nFollowing an increase in cost for both room hire and the booking system the fee for booking all talks will now be rounded up from £2:88p to a straight £3 (something that many of you have recommended all along!) \nAs usual\, the event takes place at The San Clu Hotel with doors open at 6:30pm and the talk itself from 7pm to 8pm. Non members of the society are requested to consider an additional voluntary donation of £3 or to take the opportunity at the talk to join the Society. \nBook here in advance to attend: https://bit.ly/CoastwatchTalk

SUMMARY:December Talk: Mike Goldwater and Sarah Tait “Behind the ISLAND”
DESCRIPTION:For this last event of 2024 we will be at The Oak Hotel with mulled wine and mince pies on offer. It will be particularly lovely to be getting together with our regular talk attenders. \nJust over three months ago\, photographer Mike Goldwater and poet Sarah Tait launched their book I S L A N D and promptly sold out the first print run. Whether you bought it or not we hope you will come and hear some of the background to the authors\, their love of Thanet and how the book came about. \nIsland is a collection of 129 black and white photographs taken in Thanet between 2019 and 2024. It is a celebration of Thanet as a place of deep history\, rich ecologies and shifting human tides. The photographs pay tribute to the beauty\, challenge and unique character of this special place. \nPhotographer Mike Goldwater will briefly introduce his experience as an international photojournalist before moving on to talk about his work in Thanet. He will focus on his new book I S L A N D\, discussing the stories and experiences behind some of the images. \nTo complete the project\, Mike teamed up with Ramsgate poet\, Sarah Tait. As well as giving us her insight into the craft and thought behind the poems in I S L A N D\, Sarah will be sharing some highlights from some of her other Ramsgate-related poetry\, wrapping aspects of place\, history\, and community within her work. \nSarah will also share with us some information on her plans for 2025 – including the Clock House Museum project\, and a Jane Pugin/Knill anniversary community event. \nAs usual please book your place in advance. SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk on Ramsgate Harbour - Royalty and the Every-day
DESCRIPTION:For the second Ramsgate Society talk on the Friday of the week of Heritage Open Day activities we are delighted to welcome back Diane Harvey-White. As a freelance heritage consultant Diane was part of the design team for the architects appointed in March 2023 for regeneration projects in Ramsgate Harbour and\, more recently\, provided a historic background for Ramsgate Town Council on Radford House. \nBestowed with the honour of becoming the Royal Harbour in 1821\, Ramsgate is the only Royal harbour in the country. But what did this actually mean? Harbour business was conducted with the focus on the working requirements of the industries or organisations based in or using the harbour and yet throughout the nineteenth century royal visits would embark and disembark from Ramsgate. This included the voyages of the European Royal families and their entourages. Diane Harvey-White explores the impacts and comedic elements of a working harbour that had to accommodate royal personages at the same time as operating efficiently for the every-day occurrence. \nIncluded in her talk will be content to help understand why George IV chose Ramsgate as his departure point in 1821\, but it will then focus on the harbourmasters and the royal visits up until the Royal Temple Yacht Club was granted its Royal title. \nDoors open at 6:30 with talk and questions between 7pm and 8pm. As part of the Heritage Open day initiative this talk\, although organised by the Ramsgate Society\, is open to all and free of charge (though voluntary donations welcomed). \nAlthough free\, we are requiring you to book here so we can control numbers and you can do so here: https://bit.ly/3ymo3U0 or click the website link below

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk: Where Heritage Harbours have come from and what they could achieve
DESCRIPTION:For our first Ramsgate Society talk on the Monday of the week of Heritage Open Day activities we welcome Henry Cleary\, Chair of the Maritime Heritage Trust\, the national membership organisation for heritage vessels and maritime projects. This timely event celebrates the accreditation of Ramsgate in 2024 as a ‘Heritage Harbour’. \nThis new accreditation scheme is a joint initiative of the Maritime Heritage Trust\, National Historic Ships UK and Historic England. \nHeritage Harbours are about a joining up between historic vessels\, buildings and the land and water space around them and attracting support from the wider community to help them survive and prosper. Smaller ports are critical for the historic vessel fleet and there is increasing support for the amenity and health benefits they can offer. From 7th September 2024 there will be 14 Heritage Harbours and Heritage Inland Ports nationally\, supported by National Historic Ships UK\, Historic England and the Maritime Heritage Trust (which currently hosts the national meetings). For the future the challenge is to grow and strengthen this network through joint promotion\, lobbying and co-operation. \nCome along to the San Clu Hotel on September 9th to hear more about the scheme and what it could mean for Ramsgate. Doors open at 6:30 with talk and questions between 7pm and 8pm. As part of the Heritage Open day initiative this talk\, although organised by the Ramsgate Society\, is open to all and free of charge (though voluntary donations welcomed). \nAlthough free\, we are requiring you to book so we can control numbers. SUMMARY:Regeneration of the Clock House and Ramsgate's Maritime Museum
DESCRIPTION:We return to the San Clu on July 25th and will welcome Rob Warren (Museum & Gallery Consultant on the Ramsgate Society Committee) and Lucia Tanner (Regeneration Project Officer at Thanet District Council) to bring us all up to date on what is happening on the Clock House and Maritime Museum: the building\, the collection\, the finances\, the opportunities and the problems. It is your chance to catch up and also to raise any questions you may have. \nTo quote Rob Warren\, Museum Curator and our advisor on the Ramsgate Society committee : “Museums are not full of old objects – museums are full of people and stories. And not just of a harbour or a town or an island\, but of the culture\, of the legacy\, and of the world. The Clock House is brimming with such objects\, revealing their invisible recordings to anyone who wants to discover them. The preservation of these objects is a critical first step towards returning our Maritime Museum to the town and in this talk I want to look at how we aim to rediscover those people and stories through the Collection Project taking place over the summer.” \nHe also keen to acknowledge the support he is receiving to keep the project moving: ‘There are two reasons why this is going well. One is the continuing support of TDC\, demonstrating their desire to reinstate the Clock House as a museum at the heart of the town and community. But the real stars are the volunteers. A team of passionate and dedicated folks who come down to the harbour every day\, rain or shine\, and give their precious time\, energy\, and effort. Always with a smile and always happy to do whatever is needed.’ \nWe will also be delighted to welcome Lucia Tanner who can set the scene from the TDC point of view regarding the importance of this project within the Levelling Up funds allocated to Ramsgate. \nThis is sure to be a very popular event and pre booking is essential at £2.88 a ticket for Society Members. Non members will be asked to make a voluntary donation of a further £3 on the door. \nAs usual\, doors open at 6:30pm and the talk will start at 7pm and run for an hour including questions. \nTo book click here: https://bit.ly/ClockHouseTalkWEb or use the Website Link below

SUMMARY:Results of Feasibility Study to bring back Tall Ships Regatta to Ramsgate
DESCRIPTION:Almost a year ago in July 2023 we hosted a talk by Paul Bishop and Stephen Byrne on the possibility of bringing Tall Ships events back to Ramsgate as a way of using Ramsgate’s maritime heritage to boost the visitor economy. \nEarlier this year the Ramsgate Society and the Ramsgate Regeneration Alliance jointly commissioned a report on the Feasibility of bringing a Tall Ships Regatta to Ramsgate harbour in May 2026. We received a grant from Ramsgate Town Council\, and sponsorship from local resident Graham Burrell and specialist developers Arcvelop Ltd. (Arcvelop will shortly be starting a new development in Albion Place\, which has received good design reviews from the Ramsgate Heritage and Design Form – you can read more about them here (Link to https://arcvelop.com ) \nThe feasibility Study has been carried out by Paul Bishop of Tall Ships Global and he will be presenting the results of the study at a Ramsgate Society Talk on Thursday 20th June at 7pm at the San Clu Hotel. \nPaul has had a life-long career in sail training and Tall Ships Races. Early on\, he was the skipper of the sail training ketch Scott Bader Commonwealth in the 1980s\, when he was a frequent visitor to Ramsgate harbour and the Royal Temple Yacht Club! \nHe went on to have a number of management and leadership roles with sail training organisations and was the Race Director for Sail Training International for 14 years before setting up Tall Ships Global Consultancy Limited in 2020. He has been responsible for over 70 Tall Ships Race host ports all over the world as a Race Director and now uses his extensive experience and specialist knowledge with ports planning to put on Tall Ships events. He is delighted to be involved with the proposed Royal Ramsgate Tall Ships Festival 2026. He was honoured to be awarded an MBE in the 2023 Kings New Year’s Honours list for services to young people through Sail Training. \nThis opportunity to meet Paul again and to be informed about the next stage takes place on June 20th at the San Clu. As usual doors open at 6:30pm and the talk of about 45 minutes will start at 7pm and be followed by about 15 minutes of Q & A. Places must be booked in advance at £2 (+ 88p for Eventbrite costs). Non-members of the Ramsgate Society will be requested to add a voluntary donation of £3 on the door. \nBook here https://bit.ly/TallShipsFeasibilityWeb \nor click the ‘Website’ link below

SUMMARY:Peeling Back the Layers of History for the Old Fire Station
DESCRIPTION:If you were lucky enough to be in the audience for the talk by Dianne Harvey-White on our Heritage Harbour\, you will understand why we have invited her back to talk about her work for Ramsgate Town Council on a Conservation Management Plan for the Grade II designated Old Fire Station (Radford House). \nThe conversion to Radford House as a community events centre is\, of course\, its second change of use since the building was not constructed as a Fire Station but converted from a private dwelling in 1904. Her research into the building known as “Effingham” revealed family links to the Tomson and Wootton brewery and also challenges several Ramsgate myths about the construction of the town. In a tantalising aside she suggests Effingham Street may not have been all it was talked up to be. \nThe building itself reveals clues to the previous layout and demonstrates an Edwardian interpretation of a Georgian building. Analysing the fabric reveals interesting phases of construction which contribute to the palimpsest of the building and its historic significance\, providing information about the changes to domestic buildings over that time. \nThe talk takes place in Radford House on May 23rd and\, time permitting\, will also afford the opportunity to explore the building. As usual\, doors open at 6:30pm and the talk of about 45 minutes will start at 7pm and be followed by about 15 minutes of Q & A. Places must be booked in advance at £2 (+ 88p for Eventbrite costs). Non-members of the Ramsgate Society will be requested to add a voluntary donation of £3 on the door. \nTo book go to https://bit.ly/RadfordTalk or simply click where it says ‘Website’ below. \nTerry Prue \nCommunication Lead

SUMMARY:Remembering the Mining Heritage of East Kent
DESCRIPTION:Those relatively new to Ramsgate may be unaware that we have any connection with coal mining but all the main Kent collieries were within 15 miles of us and because they were all in rural locations it was in towns like Deal and Ramsgate that many miners were living. \n\nIn the early 1900s when the main Kent mines were opening\, much of the skilled labour force had to be imported from existing pits elsewhere. As an example\, Ramsgate became home to the majority of the miners coming from Wales to work the Chislet Colliery in Hersden\, about 12 miles from Ramsgate on the way to Canterbury. \n\nOur talk on April 11th will include slides\, films and personal memories from Jim Davies\, an ex-miner volunteer at the Kent Mining Museum at Betteshanger. Jim is the son of a Welsh miner who made the transfer to Kent. He later followed in his father’s footsteps down the mines until (in his own words) he had the task of “putting the lights out” at the last working mine in Kent. He also remembers coming to the Ramsgate Tunnels to test for gas! \n\nThis unique event that combines formal research with oral history takes place on April 11th at the San Clu. \nBook at bit.ly/MiningTalk or via the website link below

SUMMARY:Looping the Loop: Talk now postponed
DESCRIPTION:Suzy Humphries set up Looping the Loop and will talk about current projects\, the job of building the partnerships and funding needed to create new theatre work\, and how we hope a revitalised Theatre Royal Margate may be possible. \nLooping the Loop was set up by charity Ramsgate Arts in 2013\, responding to a callout from Battersea Arts Centre for towns around England\, suffering from deprivation\, to join a new programme – the Collaborative Touring Network. The aim – to rethink the notion of ‘touring theatre’\, to make it less about piloting in and disappearing straight after the last show but about really involving\, working with and supporting the towns and people that shows visit. \nIn 2019 Looping the Loop became a separate Community Interest Company and is still creating theatre here in Thanet. They have worked with people of all ages and groups including Inspiration Creative\, East Kent Mencap\, Newington Community Centre\, Copper Kettle Home\, Homefleet House\, Jo Jo’s Dance School and migrant families in Cliftonville\, involving people directly in shows and projects\, building a stronger community through the sense of belonging and purpose gained through the group dynamic. Some members may have seen Bunker of Zion in 2022\, a joyous celebration of Zimbabwean dance and music; Inspiration Creative members worked with the company for a week and were a principal part of the performances in this national touring production. \nThe talk will take place at the San Clu Hotel in their downstairs meeting room with full disabled access and much nearby on street parking. To attend you must book in advance at £2 (+88p Eventbrite fee) a ticket. Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. Non members of the Ramsgate Society are requested to make a further voluntary donation of £3. \n \nTickets available from: https://bit.ly/LoopingtheLoopTalk or just click on the website link below.

SUMMARY:February 22nd Talk on Our Heritage Harbour
DESCRIPTION:Our next Ramsgate Society talk will be by Diane Harvey-White\, a heritage consultant and part of the design team from Curl la Tourelle Head (CLTH)\, the architects appointed in March 2023 for the regeneration projects in Ramsgate Harbour. \nShe will be drawing on her research to produce a Conservation Management Plan for the harbour\, a project that involved the research of eight individually designated buildings (including the Grade II* Clock House) and structures as well as four that come under the harbour designation – also Grade II*. Through this work she was able to plot the succession of engineers to the harbour and pinpoint who was responsible for various phases of construction and repair from 1773 through to 1926. \nHer analysis places Ramsgate Royal Harbour into the wider context of engineering innovation that includes it in the canon of work by the engineers responsible for Scarborough Harbour\, Holkham Estate\, Sheerness Dockyard\, London Bridge\, the London Docks and Newlyn Harbour. She contributes a greater understanding of the choices made for construction and materials\, showing how fashionable considerations have shaped innovation\, including the social care of the seafaring community\, for centuries. \nA focus for this presentation is not just to look back\, but to look forward and provide a greater understanding of the challenges our 280 year old harbour presents today. She will touch on conservation and sustainability\, including collaboration and partnership with other heritage harbours around the country\, and discuss the issues TDC have to deal with as owner\, which can often be misunderstood by the public. \nThis talk will take place at the San Clu Hotel in their downstairs meeting room with full disabled access and much nearby on street parking. To attend you must book in advance at £2 (+88p Eventbrite fee) a ticket. Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. SUMMARY:January 18th Talk on Ramsgate Historic Quarter
DESCRIPTION:We start 2024 with a talk by Robert Milton Wallace\, a writer and filmmaker who moved to Ramsgate in 2016. After taking an MSc in Architectural Conservation at the Kent School of Architecture\, Robert launched the Ramsgate Historic Quarter regeneration scheme as a joint venture with English Heritage and Thanet District Council to help conserve historic buildings\, promote neighbourhood pride and encourage visitor numbers. \nThe Ramsgate Historic Quarter grew up around the Upper High Street area of the town from the 17th century. The area was originally known as Westminster\, not only because of the road pointing in a westerly direction but also because of the quality of its architecture. Among the surviving examples are the red brick Georgian mansions and Dutch Gabled cottages that were homes to sea captains and merchants engaged at Kent’s busiest port. \nRobert will advocate the benefits to be gained today by recognising the unique character of this area. Not just from protecting and conserving its historic building but also from contemplating about what this area tells us about how life was lived in the 17th and 18th Centuries \nThis talk will take place on January 18th at the San Clu Hotel in their downstairs meeting room with full disabled access and much nearby on street parking. To attend you must book in advance at £2.88 a ticket. Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. SUMMARY:Talk by Laura Probert on Dame Janet Stancomb-Wills: Ramsgate's Clifftop Amazon
DESCRIPTION:The year 2023 marks the centenary of the appointment of Ramsgate’s (and Kent’s) first female mayor and greatest benefactor\, Dame Janet Stancomb-Wills. To commemorate this\, Ramsgate Working History have identified inspiring women from the town’s past whose contributions have sometimes been overlooked and lost to time. The 23 for 23 Leading Ramsgate Women are pioneers and trailblazers in civil rights\, politics\, business and the arts. Their legacy has shaped not only Ramsgate\, but also the world we live in today. \nDame Janet Stancomb-Wills achievements are central to the 23 for 23 celebrations and Laura Probert will illustrate why she was such a commanding and influential figure in the history of Ramsgate. \nAs to the ‘Cilifftop Amazon’ title of this talk\, it was in 1922 that the Revd Hertslet\, Vicar of St George’s Church\, commented that he was sure Dame Janet would have had no hesitation in leading a squadron of amazons on the East Cliff during the war\, repelling any attempt at a German landing with her own hands had the need arisen. \nDoors open at 6:30pm and the talk will run from 7pm to 8pm. Our room at the San Clu Hotel has full disabled access and facilities. There is also on-street unrestricted parking in the streets close to the venue. \nIt is free to Ramsgate Society members. Everyone is welcomed but a £3 voluntary donation will be requested from non-members. Booking in advance is essential here: https://bit.ly/DameJanetTalk

SUMMARY:The Tall Ships and Ramsgate
DESCRIPTION:Our next Ramsgate Society talk will be led by Paul Bishop and Stephen Byrne on the possibility of bringing Tall Ships events back to Ramsgate as a way of using Ramsgate’s maritime heritage to boost the visitor economy on which the town is so dependant. \nPaul Bishop is the Race Director for Sail Training International (STI) and was responsible for The Tall Ships Races 2022. He also advises on technical aspects of sail training within STI and liaises with host ports on the infrastructure\, in-port facilities and port programme necessary for the Tall Ships Races. Stephen Byrne is a Ramsgate resident and long-time supporter of the idea of bringing the Tall Ships back to Ramsgate and will talk about the Ramsgate perspective. \nRamsgate Royal Harbour was designed as a port of refuge for Tall Ships and presently hosts occasional tall ships\, usually attracting a great deal of local and visitor interest. \nThe last tall ship fleet welcomed to the harbour was in 2009 when a group from Holland were hosted by the Royal Temple Yacht Club where this talk will be held.\nThe popularity of Tall Ship events is clearly evidenced by the remarkable consistent success of such events managed by Sail Training International which organises Regattas (port to port events with typically 15 to 20 vessels) and Tall Ship Races (long distance events covering many ports for larger fleets and larger vessels). \nAll are welcome and attendance is free for members of the Ramsgate Society with non-members requested to make a voluntary donation of £3. Doors open at 6:30pm with the talk starting at 7pm. \nTo attend you must book in advance here: bit.ly/TallShipTalk

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk: Banned. Place\, Belonging\, Identity
DESCRIPTION:The Ramsgate Society provided research support to the curator of this exhibition\, Sabina Desir\, by gathering stories from those who were in our town (as children of course) during the time the American Airforce was stationed at RAF Manston during the ‘Cold War’ period of 1951 to 1958. \nNewspaper research\, our calls for people with memories through social media and our monthly Society newsletter produced nearly 100 recollections and from these we traced many of the images and stories you will find at the exhibition currently running till May 8th at the Turner Contemporary in Margate. \nThe exhibition\, curated by Sabina\, with Richard Birch as Visual Adviser\, explores differing responses by town council and local people to having 2\,500 USAF servicemen on their doorstep. These servicemen included 200 African American’s and other non-whites who\, because of the racial segregation of the US military\, were directed to be billeted and to seek entertainment in Ramsgate while the white servicemen were encouraged to concentrate in other Thanet towns. \nWe hope you will be pleased to learn that Ramsgate residents demonstrated a general hospitality to the airman\, regardless of race\, and fought against their own town council when the mayor suggested banning all American servicemen at Manston from having access to the town facilities. \nThe presentation on March 17th by Sabina Desir\, with support from Terry Prue\, will provide extra detail on what we found and some of the stories behind what you can see at the Turner. It is also a ‘thank you’ from us for the wealth of information we collected from Ramsgate residents before the passing of time risked that it would be gone forever. \nAs usual you must pre-book to attend and doors open at 6:30pm for the presentation and discussion runs from 7pm to 8pm. \nBooking at bit.ly/BannedTalk
