SUMMARY:Radford House: Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:Our next Ramsgate Society talk brings takes us into Radford House to listen to the Ramsgate Town Councillor Anne-Marie Nixie and Radford House Project Managers Michael Fowley and Andrew Hadden talk about this important building: \n\nWhat was it before it became the fire station?\nWhy did the fire station move elsewhere\nHow did it come to be owned by Ramsgate Town Council?\nWhy has it been renamed?\nWhat is the place now going to be offering and what will it look like?\n\nThis will be your chance to not just learn about future plans but also to contribute ideas for how it could become an essential and well used community asset. \nSince the capacity is slightly less than our normal venue it will be even more important to book your place – but please do not do so unless you really are sure you will be attending. \nClick here to book https://bit.ly/RadfordHouseTalk

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk: Geraint Franklin "Researching Ramsgate"
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Geraint Franklin from Historic England to give more context to the historic development of our town. \nAutumn 2022 marks the publication of Historic England’s Ramsgate Historic Area Assessment (HAA)\, the final research outcome of the Ramsgate Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) initiative. The report charts the historical development of the town and profiles its character and significance. In this talk Geraint provides an introduction to the HAA\, including both insights and opportunities for further research. \nOriginally a fishing community in the parish of St Lawrence\, Ramsgate assumed greater importance on becoming a limb of the Cinque Port of Sandwich. The commencement of a ‘harbour of refuge’ in 1750 coincided with Ramsgate’s growing popularity as a sea bathing resort. Improvements in passenger boats and the arrival of the railway opened up the resort to an increasingly broad social spectrum of visitors\, resulting in investment in bathing facilities\, entertainment venues and civic infrastructure. Ramsgate also attracted minority faith communities\, represented by the Montefiore Synagogue and A. W. N. Pugin’s Roman Catholic church of St Augustine. \nGeraint’s talk will explore the historical development of the town and profile the character and significance of its built heritage\, providing an evidence base for sustainable regeneration. The Historic Area Assessment is intended to assist stakeholders\, the local community and others in showing how Ramsgate has assumed its present form\, in identifying a range of building and landscape types and relating them to wider historical contexts. \nThe talk is free for Ramsgate Society members. Non-members are welcome but are asked to consider a voluntary donation of £3. Doors open at 6:30pm for the talk from 7pm to 8pm. As always\, places must be booked in advance. \nClick here to reserve your place: bit.ly/FranklinTalk

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk: Ivan del Renzio presents ‘An Architect’s Vision for Ramsgate’
DESCRIPTION:Ivan is a co-director of del Renzio & del Renzio\, a Ramsgate based RIBA Chartered practice\, who also teaches at the school of Architecture at the University of Kent focusing on regeneration projects in coastal towns. He argues that with the advent of the levelling up funding and previous piecemeal interventions in and around Ramsgate a joined-up plan is required. The practice will present some ideas and provocations to further the discussion on how Ramsgate could be made even better with small\, medium and larger ideas across Ramsgate with a brief history of the areas. The ideas have been developed through dialogue with residents\, students and practitioners. \nThe talk is free for Ramsgate Society members. Non-members are welcome but are asked to consider a voluntary donation of £3. Doors open at 6:30pm and places must be booked in advance. \nClick here to reserve you place:  bit.ly/delRenzioTalk

SUMMARY:A history-based talk to raise funs for St Laurence Church
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Bolton returns to St Laurence Church for another local-history based talk with all proceeds going to church funds. She will be looking at the lives of Katheryn Sprackling killed in 1652 and Sarah Noel who died in 1893. It will not be some sensationalist revelling in an evil act but rather an attempt to understand what shaped the two victims. What were their childhoods like? What education did they have? What happened at their weddings? What was their experience of motherhood and marriage? What was the parish like when they were here? Katheryn was a Puritan gentlewoman and Sarah a girl of humble origins who became a businesswoman. Both were active Christians and both met brutal ends before being laid to rest at St Laurence. How did the parish respond to each of the tragedies? What became of those left behind? And what is the link to Sherlock Holmes? Tickets will be available from the Parish Office at £5 a head which includes refreshments. All proceeds to church funds. Pre-booking is not essential but it does make it much easier for catering.

SUMMARY:Ramsgate Society Talk by Rob Kenyon and Kevin O’Connor on plans for Granville House and the Arts Barge
DESCRIPTION:As event organisers ourselves we are very aware that Ramsgate is lacking in creative spaces and indoor venues so we are particularly pleased to welcome the leaders of two social enterprise not-for-profit organisations with ambitions to fill the gap through major renovation projects. \nRob Kenyon is CEO and Founder of Heritage Lab CIC which has an overall aim to help regenerate Ramsgate and to support the local community and creative sector. One of their headline ambitions is to take over and renovate the currently unused public spaces within Granville House. \nKevin O’Connor is Director of the Ramsgate Arts Barge CIC which has ambitions to create a new multi-faceted arts and cultural space on a 133-year old Dutch barge permanently moored in Ramsgate Harbour. \nTo hear and to be able to ask questions about their plans and (hopefully) their progress you must reserve a place on the Eventbrite site. Doors open at 6:30pm. A voluntary donation of £3 is requested to help funding for the Festival. \nClick on the website link below (bit.ly/CICVisionTalk) to reserve a place

SUMMARY:Sandwich and Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Agostina Campodonico talks of the wildlife of the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay areas and of the ambitious future plans for the site. \nSandwich and Pegwell Bay is a coastal reserve full of incredible wildlife. Elusive cuckoos\, rare lizard orchids and harbour seals can all be found here. Though it is recognized for having the best preserved sand dune system in South East England\, this reserve is probably best known as a birdwatcher’s gem. Spring and summer give passage migrants a warm welcome as they stop for the breeding season. Nightingales and Cuckoos loudly advertise their territories whilst the perfectly camouflaged eggs of Ringed Plovers go unnoticed on the shingle. Autumn and winter see the arrival of a spectacular number of birds completing epic journeys from places as far as Canada\, Siberia and Southern Africa\, attracted by the warmth and vast expanse of the soft\, unfrozen mudflats of the bay. \nTo hear about the work that goes on to support this natural gem come to this Ramsgate Society Talk – all are welcome but non-members of the Ramsgate Society are asked to consider a voluntary donation of £3. Doors open at 6:30 and places must be booked in advance. \n\nClick here to reserve a place: https://bit.ly/PegwellTalkTickets

SUMMARY:Talk on Building the Medieval Church
DESCRIPTION:The parish church of St Laurence will be holding a talk that we think will be popular with many of our Ramsgate Society members. The church is Grade 1 listed and nearly 1\,000 years old and the local historian Margaret Bolton will be giving a presentation on ‘Building the Medieval Church. \nShe will be covering questions like: \n\nHow did they build the church?\nWho worked on it?\nWhere did the materials come from?\nHow much did it cost?\nWhy did they build it here?\nWhat do all the carvings mean?\nHow long did it take?\n\nIt is a fully illustrated talk in two parts. the first will look at how and why churches were planted in the middle ages and at how the buildings developed. There will then be a half hour or so refreshment break during which people can explore the church if they wish. St Laurence is around 900 years old and has some excellent medieval carvings. The second part will look at the people involved in the building process\, where they came from\, how the materials were sourced and brought to site\, the way in which the work was done and what it all cost. \nTickets £5 (including refreshments) available from the Parish Office.  Email office@stlaurenceparish-ramsgate.org.uk   Phone 01843 592478 \n \n

SUMMARY:From Roman province to Saxon kingdom: the Transformation of Kent in the Age of St Augustine
DESCRIPTION:. \nThis is not our event but we know many of you will be interested to hear Dr Michael Bintley give this talk at 7pm on June 2nd at the Visitor Centre\, St Augustine’s Church. \nDr Bintley will explore all aspects of this transformation – the buildings\, the roads\, the laws\, the wars\, the literature and\, of course\, the religion. He will have plenty to say about the place of Augustine’s mission in this historic change and also tell us about the contribution of the great abbots and abbesses who followed in Augustine’s footsteps here in Kent and further afield. He will (he promises) have new facts to reveal about St Eanswythe whose relics were discovered a couple of years ago in a Folkestone church. He will also read extracts from the exciting Old English story called Andreas – and tell us what it means.  We are told that Dr Bintley\, who mainly lectures to adults at Birkbeck College\, is an excellent speaker and a real enthusiast for his subject. I am sure it will be a fun and informative evening. The cost is £3 to cover Dr Bintley’s expenses.

SUMMARY:In the Deep Midwinter: It's Later Than You Think
DESCRIPTION:After delays caused by Covid\, we are kicking off our 2022 programme of talks with Brian Daubney\, our editor of the Society’s Ramsgate Matters magazine. In his own inimitable and multi-talented style\, he will give a seasonal talk on why the story of a 200-year old harbour takes us to the ancient world of Spain\, the Lebanon and even further back into pre-history. \nSeas\, storms\, dark days\, dance\, music\, words\, feasting and how the natural world continues to rule. \nAll places must be booked in advance as this does generate the ability for us to email everyone with the current Covid regulations right up to the day itself. The talk starts at 7pm with doors open from 6.30pm. \nIt is free for members – click here to reserve a place: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-ramsgate-society-talk-for-january-21st-2022-tickets-228504441937
