SUMMARY:The Dunkirk Little Ships Return in May
DESCRIPTION:This month sees a new year of displays and events to commemorate the involvement of Ramsgate in Operation Dynamo with over 25 of the ‘Little Ships’ returning to Ramsgate Harbour. The programme has already started and builds towards a four-day commemorative weekend (22–25 May). \nFrom 15 May to 28 June\, the harbour will host a major installation by Standing With Giants with 338 life-sized silhouettes lining the harbour railings\, each one representing 1\,000 soldiers rescued during Operation Dynamo. Together\, they create a striking visual tribute to the 338\,226 servicemen brought to safety in 1940. \nThe final opportunity to see the installation will be on 28 June\, following Ramsgate’s Armed Forces Day Parade on 27 June. \nFor a full list of activities go to the Visit Ramsgate website or click for the the Operation Dynamo programme including the peak of activities over the 22-25 May weekend.

SUMMARY:July Talk: Uncovering the Clockhouse
DESCRIPTION:Once again we welcome Dianne Harvey-White who will delve into the lesser-known history of this early nineteenth century landmark building and its designer Samuel Wyatt. \n\n\n\nAs the conservation programme nears its end\, research undertaken by Diane Harvey-White in the last year has revealed more information about this enigmatic survivor from the early nineteenth century. \nDiane explores the contemporaneous and social history of the era of construction and the impacts this had on the decisions made by the owners\, the Board of Trustees for Ramsgate Harbour. \nPlacing this in context she considers how these decisions impact the building today and places it in the canon of work of the designer\, Samuel Wyatt\, Engineer to the Harbour from 1793-1807\, revealing the true meaning of a building constructed to be useful to a working harbour. \nDiane Harvey-White is a heritage advisor who has written a number of Conservation Management Plans for local buildings. She has lectured at University of Kent School of Art and Architecture and had articles published by the IHBC. Her lengthy research into Ramsgate Harbour is shortly to be published as the book Where Sea Meets the Land: Ramsgate Royal Harbour. \nAs usual\, the ticket cost is £3 for Ramsgate Society members and £5 for guests. Doors open at 6:30pm with the talk (including Q&A) from 7pm to 8pm. \nTickets on sale from 9am June 1st at https://bit.ly/ClockhouseTalk
