You have probably noticed the recent erection of three new Ramsgate Blue Plaques dedicated to Spencer Gore, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Jane Austen. In each case there has been an enthusiastic proposer for us to include a new plaque and we want to open the process to all of you to nominate new subjects for future commemoration.

Suggestions will be considered against criteria of the importance of the person and evidence that they lived or visited the address where the plaque is to be placed.

In order to make sure that Ramsgate Blue Plaques maintain a high standard of public importance and relevance we adopt the criteria published by English Heritage for London. You can download a full copy of their rules HERE.

Most importantly, the following requirements must be met:

  • They should be of significant public standing in a London-wide (or for us Ramsgate), national or international context
  • They should be understood to have made some important positive contribution to human welfare or happiness
  • Their achievements should have made an exceptional impact in terms of public recognition; or
  • There shall be strong grounds for believing that they are regarded as eminent and distinguished by a majority of members of their own profession or calling.

Without exception, proposals for such commemoration will not be considered until the subject has been dead for twenty years.

Please also note that these plaques are costly so we have to be selective and careful not to take on too many together.
