Heritage Harbours (including Heritage Inland Ports) is a joint initiative between local groups and Maritime Heritage Trust, National Historic Ships and Historic England to help safeguard and conserve our most historic locations with the buildings, quays, shipyards, and environments that make them special.
To mark the inclusion of the Ramsgate Royal Harbour within the nationally recognised Heritage Harbour designation there are multiple events planned for September. Better still, they are to be combined with the annual Heritage Open Days event so all free of charge!
To understand more about the origins and benefits of Heritage Harbour accreditation we have arranged for Henry Cleary OBE, Chair of the Maritime Heritage Trust to give a free talk at 7pm on Monday September 9th at the San Clu Hotel. It is free but please reserve your place here https://bit.ly/3YqaLAE
There will also be a more general Ramsgate Society talk about our harbour and the interplay between royalty and the everyday business of the port by Diane Harvey-White on Friday September 13th. This is also at the San Clu at 7pm and you can reserve your free place here https://bit.ly/3ymo3U0
To learn more about all the other events surrounding the celebration of becoming a Heritage Harbour we have added a new section to this website. If you look to the index for this site you will find ‘Heritage Harbour’ listed between the Gallery and the Archive.
That will bring you to this page which will provide up to date information on all the Heritage Harbour events planned for September:

All of this activity fits within the umbrella of the Heritage Open Days programme. As many of you will know, every September, much of England’s fantastic architecture and culture is celebrated during Heritage Open Days, when many historical buildings open their doors to the public, giving you the chance to visit for FREE.
This year Heritage Open Days celebrates its 30th anniversary with the festival running between Friday 6th – Sunday 15th September. You can see the full list of these free events Thanet here

Finally, to note that, as in previous years, the Ramsgate Society has taken on the responsibility for organising and co-ordinating the Heritage Open Day list for Ramsgate. To see what is happening just in our own town, including those specifically linked to the Heritage Harbour you will find details here
