For some time now, Phil Shotton, The Ramsgate Society Environment Lead, has been unable  to contribute any ‘Climate Matters’ posts but he remains as  passionate as ever about the environment and its value to the community.

At the recent Planning Inspectorate public examination to the plans by National Grid (not a ‘national’ company but a foreign-owned utility) to bring ashore a high-voltage electricity connector across Pegwell Bay to a proposed massive converter station on the Minster Marshes, he joined many others from the community in voicing my opposition through verbal submission to the siting of the project in such a nationally important wetland habitat.

He has now followed up with a written submission against the inclusion of the old Hoverport site as part of the development. To be clear, he (and the Society) are strongly in favour of moving to a completely renewable energy foundation for Britain’s electricity and the need to build infrastructure to support this. However, we also believe that there are other options for siting this station that do not impact such an important wetland environment.
