From Roman province to Saxon kingdom: the Transformation of Kent in the Age of St Augustine
2 June, 2022 @ 7:00 pm
£3.
This is not our event but we know many of you will be interested to hear Dr Michael Bintley give this talk at 7pm on June 2nd at the Visitor Centre, St Augustine’s Church.
Dr Bintley will explore all aspects of this transformation – the buildings, the roads, the laws, the wars, the literature and, of course, the religion. He will have plenty to say about the place of Augustine’s mission in this historic change and also tell us about the contribution of the great abbots and abbesses who followed in Augustine’s footsteps here in Kent and further afield. He will (he promises) have new facts to reveal about St Eanswythe whose relics were discovered a couple of years ago in a Folkestone church. He will also read extracts from the exciting Old English story called Andreas – and tell us what it means. We are told that Dr Bintley, who mainly lectures to adults at Birkbeck College, is an excellent speaker and a real enthusiast for his subject. I am sure it will be a fun and informative evening. The cost is £3 to cover Dr Bintley’s expenses.
